AlimenTerra
What is AlimenTerra?
AlimenTerra is a new network of European organisations committed to developing practical and co-operative action leading to the creation of a truly sustainable European food system.
The organisations currently participating in the AlimenTerra project come from five European countries: France; Italy; the Netherlands; Spain and the UK and represent all types of food producers from farmers’ unions and development organisations to NGO’s, local food initiatives and organic support bodies.
Intercoop
Intercoop is a cooperative union based in the Castellón province of Spain and, like Ruralscapes, it is a founder member of Alimenterra. It has nearly 100,000 members made up of agricultural workers, individual producers and smaller farming cooperatives. Working together with Intercoop these members strive to employ entirely sustainable farming methods.
Ruralscapes and Intercoop
Ruralscapes and Intercoop have been operating a trading pilot over the last eighteen months. Products such as Hanby Ales, Uncle Peter’s Marinades and Eddisbury Fruit Juice, all produced locally in Shropshire, have been made available to consumers in Spain. Equally, we are able to offer a variety of traditional Spanish products such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Almonds and Nísperos (Medlars) available directly to you through our Local Feast initiative www.localfeast.co.uk/spanishspecialities.
Shortened supply route
Trading through the Alimenterra network ensures that produce gets to consumers in as short a time as possible. Keeping the supply route short helps to minimise food miles and ensures that producers receive a fair price for their produce.
